Doctoral Researcher (f/div/m) Synthetic Biology of Therapeutic Microbes

starting from January 1st 2021.

Research Areas:

  • Synthetic Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology
  • This project will address the engineering of probiotic microorganisms into Therapeutic Microbes for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

The field of work might include:

  • Evaluation and genetic optimization of diverse probiotic organisms for biomedical applications (chassis design)
  • Selection and engineering of sensing, adhesion and effector proteins
  • Optimization of biosynthetic pathways
  • Construction of synthetic regulatory gene circuits
  • Directed evolution
  • Bioassays for determination of anti-virulence activity

Requirements:

Main requirements:

• Degree and excellent experience in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, metabolic engineering or related disciplines. Candidates about to obtain their degree are welcomed to apply.

• Advanced experience in molecular biology and genetic engineering of bacteria or yeasts

• Experience in microbial (co-)cultivations

• The candidate should be willing and able to work in an international, interdisciplinary research team

• Ability for team-oriented as well as creative and independent work

• Very good communication skills in English

Preferred Skills:

• Skills in protein science (protein purification, Western Blot, etc.)

• Experience in biochemistry (enzymatic reactions) and microtiter plate-based assays

• Experience in analytical methods (HPLC, LC-MS etc.)

• Good knowledge in microscopy and/or microfluidics techniques is advantageous

The successful candidate will be hosted in the independent Junior Research Group "Synthetic Microbiology" headed by Dr. Gerald Lackner. The group conducts innovative cutting-edge research by combining synthetic biology with natural product research and infection biology. The Leibniz-HKI is embedded in the outstanding scientific environment of the Beutenberg Campus providing state-of-the-art research facilities and a highly integrative network of life science groups. The PhD candidate will participate in the structured program of the International Leibniz Research School and become an associated member of the Jena School of Microbial Communication.
