Four full professorships (W3) within the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse

Jena provides an attractive research environment with a highly integrative network of natural and life science research groups, which is also characterized by close cooperation between the university, non-university research institutions and local biotech companies.

The Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena combines expertises in life, optical, material and computational sciences to elucidate the role of microbiomes in different habitats in order to identify overarching regulatory principles that can be harnessed to address societal needs in healthcare and environmental stewardship. Members of the Cluster will benefit from an interdisciplinary imaging facility, data analysis support and our affiliated early career researchers program of the Jena School for Microbial Communication.

The Friedrich Schiller University Jena invites applications for four full professorships (W3) within the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse:

Biostructural Interactions

We seek a candidate with experience in biological structure elucidation relating to intercellular (chemical) communication. The professorship focuses on the characterization and functional analysis of (sub-) cellular structures, such as pili, gated channels or vesicles, that mediate the contact, signal transduction and/or chemical exchange within microbial communities as well as with their environment and host organisms.

Viral Ecology

We encourage applications from researchers with a broad experience in viral ecology, including aquatic ecosystems or other hab-itats. This professorship will establish the research focus on the characterization and functional analysis of environmental viromes. Experience in the field of health research is also welcomed.

Microbiome Dynamics

Candidates with a successful track record in microbiome research with emphasis on Fungi are encouraged to apply. The suc-cessful candidate will be expected to carry out a rigorous research program in the dynamics of host-associated microbiome composition and function, incorporating the fungal component of microbiomes.

Theoretical Microbial Ecology

We are looking for an individual experienced in theoretical ecology with focus on microbiology, systems biology theory development, bioinformatics and/or modelling. The professorship will develop overarching theoretical and conceptual principles of the recruitment, maintenance and functionality of microbial consortia, as well as developing data analysis tools for extracting fundamental and recurring patterns and commonalities.

Successful candidates will be appointed as professor at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The professorships are part of the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse. Candidates with an excellent publication record and experience in the respective subject areas are encouraged to apply. The acquisition of third-party funding and leadership skills are expected. The positions further involve teaching in relevant degree programs. The professorships actively contribute to the research profile of Jena and expand and intensify the cooperation between research groups.
