The mission of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung in Düsseldorf is to understand and design nanostructured materials down to atomic and electronic scales. In this spirit, we conduct basic research on structural and functional materials, mostly metallic alloys, embracing synthesis and processing, characterization and properties, as well as their response in engineering components exposed to real environmental conditions. We work interdisciplinary, with intense mutual stimulation among experimentalists and theoreticians as well as among different groups and departments.

The junior research group 'Spectroscopy at Electrochemical Interfaces' studies properties and dynamic processes on solid interfaces using modern surface sensitive spectroscopic methods. We strive to understand basic phenomena of interface solvation and how these are influenced by the nanostructure of the interface. Amongst other techniques, we employ optical spectroscopies (IR, Raman, spectroscopic ellipsometry) coupled with electrochemistry. We are looking for motivated and talented students to join as PhD student (m/f/d). 

Your tasks

You will conduct a research project, to study solvation of nano particles by means of solvation shell vibrational spectroscopy.
 

Your profile

  • excellent B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or a related field
  • profound English language skills allowing scientific discussions and presentations
  • practical experience in lab work and research
  • experience with interface spectroscopy methods especially vibrational spectroscopies is an advantage

What we offer

The work is deeply embedded within the cluster of excellence 'RESOLV' (www.solvation.de) and in collaboration with the Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB). Thus, prospective students will be involved in the activities of this higly dynamic network and eventually join the graduate program of the integrated Graduate School Solvation Science (iGSS) at RUB.

Salary

The PhD position is temporary for 3 years and paid 65% according to the collective agreement in German public service (TVÖD E13).
