Post-Doctoral Research Associate (m/f/d)

Stellenangebot vom 28.10.2021

The Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics is one of about 86 research institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science e.V. (MPG). The MPG is an independent, non-profit research organization, which seeks to promote basic research in the service of the general public.

The department of quantum dynamics and control (Prof. Thomas Pfeifer) offers a position as a Post Doctoral Research Associate (m/f/d).

Your field of activity

Developing an upgrade for an existing, novel superconducting radio-frequency ion trap for quantum logic spectroscopy of highly charged ions. We plan to improve the capabilities of our ion trap (Cryogenic Paul Trap Experiment Superconducting, CryPTEx-SC) for holding multiple ground-state cooled ions and setting up a frequency-comb stabilized many-frequency laser interrogation scheme for qubits based on highly charged ions. The CryPTEx team consists of several PhD students and postdocs and is part of the Highly Charged Ion Dynamics group (Crespo lab) at the Pfeifer Division of MPIK. The new experiment is fully funded.

Scope

The successful candidate will adapt our current working design to the new experimental requirements and oversee the manufacturing of the parts in our workshops. In collaboration with other members of the group, the successful candidate will assemble the upgraded superconducting ion trap and participate in the experiments integrating the new trap and the existing one with a largely automatic laser cooling system for quantum logic spectroscopy applications.

The proposed experiments will investigate the stabilization of a many-qubit system in an ultra-low noise trap environment providing long coherence times and strongly suppressed perturbations. Quantum logic spectroscopy of many-qubit ensembles containing highly charged ions, searches for a time variation of fundamental constants and frequency metrology stabilization of lasers are part of the intended experiments.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics
  • Experience and laboratory skills in cryogenic, ultrahigh-vacuum, laser and radio-frequency methods, as well as in the conception, mechanical design, assembly and commissioning of precision atomic physics experiments
  • Some knowledge of finite-element methods for electromagnetic and heat transfer simulations.

The term of the positions is initially two years. Starting date as soon as possible. Remuneration will be determined on a per-candidate basis. The salary will be paid according to the collective agreement for civil service employees in Germany (TVöD).

The Max Planck Society promotes the employment of disabled persons, strives for diversity and equal opportunities including professional gender equality and excellent reconciliation of family and career. We have set our focus on increasing the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. The Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics is a family-friendly employer.
