in non-thermal astrophysics

The Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics is a world-leading centre for astroparticle, physics and quantum dynamics. The gamma-ray group consists of nearly 30 members actively working on a variety of topics from the development of hardware to data analysis and astrophysical modeling for HESS, HAWC and CTA.

The Positions

We are offering exciting scientific positions to work with a dynamic group at the cutting edge of gamma-ray astronomy. In particular, successful candidates are expected to get involved into

  • The development of the analysis software for CTA (CTA-Pipe & GammaPy)
  • The simulation and analysis of CTA data
  • The analysis of current gamma-ray telescope data (H.E.S.S., HAWC and Fermi/LAT)


Regular participation in international conferences is promoted and the applicants will aid in the supervision of doctoral students.


  • Ph.D. in physics or astronomy
  • Programming experience in Python
  • Data analysis experience
  • Strong teamwork abilities
  • Readiness to travel

The term of the positions is initially limited to 2 years, with the possibility for extension. Starting date and remuneration will be determined on a per-candidate basis.
