Postdoctoral positions - Computational Relativistic Astrophysics

The "Computational Relativistic Astrophysics" division at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (the Albert Einstein Institute) in Potsdam led by Prof. Masaru Shibata announces the opening of several postdoc appointments. The postdoctoral position will be available at different levels, depending on experience and seniority, and can last for different number of years.
The "Computational Relativistic Astrophysics" division will be composed of one group leader (Dr. Kenta Kiuchi), one senior scientist (Shinya Wanajo), and 4 postdocs in January 2019. Now, this division focuses primarily on several research topics in numerical relativity, gravitational-wave physics, and relativistic astrophysics, including
- numerical relativity with matter, in particular, neutrino-radiation-hydrodynamics, magneto-(radiation-)hydrodynamics, and viscous-radiation-hydrodynamics, for mergers of neutron-star binaries (binary neutron stars and black hole-neutron star binaries), long-term evolution of the merger remnants, and stellar collapse to a black hole,
- modeling of gravitational waves from neutron-star binaries based on gravitational waves derived by numerical-relativity simulations,
- modeling of electromagnetic counterparts (macronovae/kilonovae, short gamma-ray bursts, etc.) associated with neutron-star mergers, including the studies of r-process nucleosynthesis,
- studies for the formation mechanism of binary neutron stars/black hole-neutron star binaries,
- studies for the formation processes of a variety of black holes (stellar-mass, intermediate-mass, and supermassive black holes) including stellar evolution until the onset of the collapse, and gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signals associated with the formation processes.
However, researching a variety of other topics in computational astrophysics (even for non-relativistic astrophysics) is also encouraged.
The researchers in the "Computational Relativistic Astrophysics" division can use high-performance computers at Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF: https://www.mpcdf.mpg.de).
The “Computational Relativistic Astrophysics” division will also have our own new cluster machine from March 2019. The "Computational Relativistic Astrophysics" division has ties with the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University.
