The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne is one of the world’s premier sites committed to basic research and training in plant science. The institute comprises four scientific departments, and several independent research groups and specialist support totaling about 400 staff including externally funded positions. The position is available in the Department of Plant Microbe Interactions, studying fundamental molecular processes underlying interactions between plants and microbes.

Field of work and expertise

The candidate will work in close collaboration with group leaders and post-doctoral scientists of the plant-microbe interactions department. The main tasks of the applicant will consist of setting up, maintaining, and utilizing LC-MS-based metabolomics techniques. The applicant will be fully involved with diverse experimental lines related to metabolic interactions between plants and microbes proposed by departmental research groups. The applicant should have profound knowledge and experience in biochemistry and molecular biology. Previous experience with LC-MS-based metabolite profiling experiments is required. Proficiency in the curation of corresponding digital databases is advantageous. Additional tasks may involve molecular-genetic experiments with plants and microbes.


The successful candidate has completed professional training as a research technician with first professional experience. We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with an organized working style and team orientation. The applicant should be enthusiastic about scientific research in an international environment. Good computer skills as well as fluent English are required.
