The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena is an internationally renowned research institution with currently about 220 employees and is dedicated to basic research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. We are looking for a Scientific Project Manager (m/f/d) for a part-time position until 30.04.2023.

Background and position description:

A position for Scientific Project Manager (m/f/d) is open at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena. This is an appointment within the Model Data Integration group, at the Department Biogeochemical Integration. The BGI/MDI groups are involved in development of methods and datasets towards a better understanding of Earth System dynamics, with an emphasis on terrestrial ecosystems and biogeochemical processes.

This position relates to the Project Office BIOMASS (PrOB). The PrOB is a DLR funded initiative, related to ESA’s BIOMASS Mission. The primary objective of BIOMASS is to improve our understanding on the role of the land biosphere on the global carbon cycle, with clear implications in a context of climate change. Within this context, the PrOB particular goals include (1) knowledge synthesis and dissemination; (2) establishing a data concept; (3) gap analysis; and (4) outreach activities to a broader public. The current Scientific Project Manager position responds to the necessary scientific coordination, project management and communication (internal and external) requirements of the PrOB. We seek to appoint a highly motivated, service-oriented, pro-active and collaborative person, with a background in a related field. Previous experience working in research project management is essential.

Your Tasks:

  • Design and implementation of the scientific organizational structure of the project, including work-flow and communication activities
  • Scientific and organizational preparation of project meetings, workshops, and teleconferences within the project activities, including compilation of meeting reports
  • Setup and maintain dissemination of scientific activities via website and social media
  • Track project development towards project milestones and deliverables, and assume reporting activities (EN and DE)
  • Identify, organize and disseminate BIOMASS information: scientific and funding related
  • Coordination and organization of the dissemination activities and outreach of the project
  • Implementation of decisions made by the different project boards
  • Scientific support of synthesis activities of the project with the project partners

Your Profile:

  • Background in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, forestry, geosciences, ecology, remote sensing, geoinformatics, applied mathematics, statistics or related fields (MSc or PhD; or BSc with experience)
  • Experience in research project coordination and management activities
  • Experience in management of project websites and social media platforms
  • Experience in public relations work and outreach
  • Affinity towards teamwork and ability to work independently
  • Very good communication skills (oral and written) in both English and German

Our Offer:

This is a 50% Scientific Project Manager position to be filled as soon as possible, with current funding guaranteed for until 30.04.2023.
