The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary fundamental research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 250 people, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university, but it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. The city of Jena has an active student scene and a diverse cultural life. We are looking for an Engineer (m/f/d) for the Field Experiments & Instrumentation Group in full-time, part-time possible, fixed-term for 2 years with option to make permanent.
Background and position description
The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena is seeking to fill the position of a Research and Development Engineer. This is a position with tasks for various national and international projects such as Q-Arctic, ATTO and MANIP, which is assigned to the Service Group Field Experiments and Instrumentation. The service group, which also includes a mechanics and electronics workshop and is responsible for an experimental greenhouse, works closely with staff from the scientific departments. The group supports them in the planning, implementation and continuous operation of extensive measuring equipment in the field, in the laboratory and in the greenhouse. As part of the projects, measuring towers are installed at existing measuring stations in Germany and abroad, equipped with measuring devices and these are maintained and repaired.
Your tasks
- Designing, developing, installing and commissioning various complex measuring systems and metrological components as well as energy supply systems for various projects
- Development of complex measuring systems in the field and in the laboratory
- Maintenance and inspection as well as modernisation and modification of existing complex outdoor measuring equipment
- Maintenance, inspection and retrofitting of existing measuring stations
- Planning and documentation of projects
Your profile
- Successfully completed technical college or university education as an engineer, e.g. in the field of electrical engineering, environmental engineering or measurement technology or comparable qualifications
- Proven experience in electrical engineering, environmental engineering or measurement technology
- Extensive knowledge of scientific instrumentation
- Knowledge of modern CAD software and software for electronics/electrical engineering
- Class B driver's license
- MS Office skills
- Good knowledge of written and spoken German and English
- Strong teamwork skills and intercultural competence as well as service orientation
- Initiative and a sense of responsibility
- High flexibility and ability to work under pressure with very good time and priority management
- a goal-oriented, committed, structured way of working, organizational talent
- Interest in working with scientists in a research institution
- Willingness to undertake longer business trips to climatically challenging regions in Germany and non-European countries
Our offer
Part-time work is possible in principle. If the requirements of the collective agreement are met, the position will be graded according to TVöD Bund up to pay group E 11; in addition, we provide a pension scheme based on the public service (VBL).
